Ali Shrago-Spechler (1989), born in Hollywood, Florida. is an interdisciplinary artist whose installations, paintings and performances examine the malleability of history and imagined community. Her hybrid actions explore the comedy, violence and ubiquity of Jewish histories while creating a familiar and strange space for her audience. She has participated in residencies at Mass MoCA, ProjectArt in Crown Heights, Art Kibbutz NY, Vermont Studio Center and Trestle Artist Space. Her work has been featured in the NY Times, Time Out NY, VICE, The Forward, New Times Broward, The Miami Herald and ArtNet News. She received her BFA in Painting and Art History from Pratt Institute and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Ali is the recipient of the Naomi Anolic Emerging Artist Award (2017) and received a 10-month Fulbright Research Grant (‘20-’21) hosted by the Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie and the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe to research German Remembrance culture through the lens of the architectural, political and theatrical Thingspiele Movement (1933-35) established by the Third Reich. During her grant, she coordinated collaborative performances reclaiming Thingspiele stages throughout Germany and Poland. She is researching the German history in Israel, the history of Kaparot and connections between the development Zionist and German sport. she also creating masks to be used in performances both in Israel and Germany. for her workshop in Israel, she plans on creating teaching how to make objects and portraits of memory from recycled cardboard.
